The much beloved Gretsch \"Name Band\" outfit features an incredibly versatile combination of a classic 20\" bass drum paired with a 13\" tom and a 16\" floor tom, giving plenty of room to cover ample sonic ground. All shells feature Gretsch \"Silver Sealer\" and tags. This set has been rewrapped in a modern version of burgundy sparkle, which does differ from the authentic 1960's Gretsch version of the wrap. This wrap leans more on the purple hue and is slightly more reflective. All hardware is original with the exception of the snare wires, which have been replaced with generic snare wires. The wrap is slightly separating on the 14\" snare drum at the seam. Drum heads fit tight on these drums, as was extremely common from Gretsch drums of this era. Oversized drum heads are recommended for this kit. The bass drum is a rewrap (with the exception of the bottom panel of the bass drum) and features a slightly different pearl pattern, though it looks very at home with the toms. The bass drum has an original Sonor logo head. These drums have a natural punchy sound when tuned low and a nice dry attack when tuned higher into be-bop ranges. The set has some finicky aspects worth noting - The 12\" rack tom seems to be an add on as the badge, muffler, and hoops are slightly later in date. The 12\" tom also has trouble attaching to the double tom post when right side up. When the drum is attached upside down, it accepts the post with ease and can then be turned to proper position. The bass drum, being a rewrap, does not match the pearl pattern of the other drums exactly, and has a bit of wrap damage on the resonant side by the bearing edge. The bass drum legs are fully retractable, but need a bit of encouragement to adjust.  The floor toms has some minor wrap splitting near a few lugs, but nothing too serious. Over all this is a super enjoyable kit to play, with a wonderful tone. The floor tom has a mounting post for a straight arm to mount a small cymbal like a splash. The set does not need to be played with the snare drum mounted to the bass drum, and can be set up in a traditional manor with the snare in a basket if preferred. All collets are functional, and the snare drum strainer engages with ease and stays put. This is a beautiful late 70's\/early 80's Gretsch with the Drop G Stop Sign USA Badge made between 1979 and 1981. As far as we know, this set is factory original and born together. Most of the drums still have the original Gretsch Permatone drum heads intact and playable (they sound great!) The 12\" and 13\" toms were ordered factory with no internal mufflers, while the 14 floor and 18\" bass drum were ordered with mufflers. The double tom holder is functional, though at a certain height needs a little force to lower it further through the bass drum plate. Metal bass drum hoops are original, with the front having a factory bass drum anchor attached, and the back having a little duck tape positioned as a hoop protector. All original with the exception of the snare string. As any Ludwig or vintage drum enthusiast will say, Pink Oyster is one of Ludwig's rarest finishes, having only been produced between 1958 and 1963, with an estimate of only 100 kits having been made. This kit in particular is special, having been made not only in the Transition Badge period of Ludwig drums, but during the transition from the famous Transition Badge to the Pre-Serial number Keystone Badge. A Transition Badge is found on the 14x14 floor tom, and the rest of the drums wear Pre-Serial Keystone badges. At this time Ludwig was still finishing cycling through left over WFL parts after having reacquired the right to the Ludwig name. As such, factory WFL legs are found on the floor tom and a WFL strainer and butt plate are found on the 5.5x14 Jazz Festival snare. The bass drum has a 1960 rail consolette which mounts to a diamond plate on the 12\" tom. Both toms and the snare use factory knob internal mufflers, as they are pre Base Ball Bat. The drums have clean interiors with the floor tom and the bass drum being natural, and the rack tom and snare being painted white. This was a very common occurrence for Ludwig drums in the late 50s and early 60s, as the transition to White interiors never seemed to be a priority on all the sets leaving the factory. All drums are Mahogany\/poplar 3-ply shells. The mahogany on the floor tom has a darker veneer, while the bass drum mahogany is much lighter. All edges seem very clean, though the 12\" tom's batter bearing edge seems to have a little bit of acceptable separation from time at the scarf joint, as was very typical with Ludwig toms of the time. The bass drum hoops have seen some wear, most prominently on the resonant side, which has some pedal rash and gouging where the pedal would attach, as well as a slight hoop crack near the top of the hoop. The hoop crack however is completely repairable, and we would encourage interested buyers that the hoop is fully functional even with the mentioned flaw. The drums are faded from their original state, but in a nice way that shows age while still being true to the original color. All drums sport original Ludwig drum heads. The drums tune up well, are warm and punchy, and have a beautifully rich tone at both high and low tunings. The kit has a few unoriginal heads, but all other heads are plastic era accurate Ludwig or calf era accurate Ludwig. The drums tune beautifully high, and are thunderous cannons reminiscent of your favorite big band records when tuned low. There are a few typical dings to the bass drum hoops, which has remained untouched and have not been repainted. The 13\" rack tom has two small wrap cracks and are almost artful in an ironic way. The 16\" floor tom does not have a muffler, and came like this from the factory. The bass drum has fully functional and smooth hardware, and beautiful WFL stamped claw hooks. The famous 5.5x14 Buddy Rich snare is crisp and clear, and has original WFL wires. It is widely assumed that all 50's drums used 3 ply shells and all 60's drums used 6 ply, however though largely true, this is not always the case. Though introduced in the 1961 catalog along with the introduction of paper tags, the 6ply shell was being phased in as early as 56' while silver sealer was starting to make appearances on shells as early as 54'.  That brings us to the uniqueness of this set. Copper Mist on it's own is a rare bird, being one of the rarest finishes Gretsch produced. Now add 6 ply shells with original silver sealer. \u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003c\/ul\u003e\n\u003cul\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eFinish \u0026amp; Condition: As mentioned, Copper Mist is an extraordinarily rare Color to see on an old Round Badge. Copper Mist was most often seen as a lacquer paint covered by a protective clear wrap. The wrap would typically age changing the hue of the drums. Sometimes Gretsch would intentionally or unintentionally \u003cmeta charset=\"utf-8\"\u003eomit the protective wrap(or maybe they just did this because they had a drum ready to fill the order). This kit features said protective wrap on the bass drum and 13\" tom. The 14\" floor tom however never received the wrap and only the lacquer paint. Due to this, there is a slight color difference between the floor tom and the rest of the kit from the wrap aging on the bass drum and 13\" tom. The floor tom has also received several scuffs and has suffered a decent amount of chipping. Unfortunate yes, however given the rarity of the drum, this isn't a flaw of too much concern. There is mild ply separation and paint deterioration inside of the floor tom shell, but nothing that should cause worry. The interiors of the rest of the drums looks great and the edges are good to go. The gold sparkle hoop inlay that would have been on the bass drum is long gone except for a small strip that measures about two inches. It has been lovingly taped on as a keepsake. The green lacquer on the hoops is almost completely gone on the outer portion of the hoops but is most precent on the inner portion. All hardware is present and original on these wonderful drums. \u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003c\/ul\u003e\n\u003cul\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eHead Fitting: Per that Great Gretsch charm, the bass drum heads fit tight, however they will go on and should take oversized modern heads like the Remo Classic fit no problem. The tom heads came on and off without issue.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003c\/ul\u003e\n\u003cul\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eThe Floor Tom: If you know Gretsch, then you know that a 14\" Floor tom is not part of the \"Name Band\" outfit and should be a 16\". With that said, Gretsch never had any written rules and was known to produce kits with a 13\", 14\" configuration per request, though it is likely that this particular 14\" was paired with the kit post production. \u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003c\/ul\u003e\n\u003cul\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eThe Sizes: Despite the interesting size pairing of 22\", 13\", 14\", this configuration is surprisingly both incredibly comfortable and versatile. The pitch difference between the 13\" and 14\" is not too close despite only a one inch diameter difference. The 14\" sounds lower than we expected it to, fitting more of the role a 16\" would encompass. We were able to get both an extraordinary even, low pitched tuning out of these drums for rock and big band, as well as a perfect bop tuning. Wrap on the drums is clean as are interiors. The toms and snare all have painted grey interiors with Cleveland Tags, though the bass drum is painted with a factory black interior. It is likely that these drums were born together despite this slight difference. These drums were purchased from the fabled shop of Charlie Donnelly, Charlie Donnelly's Drum Centre of Newington Connecticut. To many, Charlie was considered the original vintage drum source when it came to both buying and information. Charlie had a tendency to repaint interiors of drums, and it appears that the snare drum interior may have received his touch. The bass drum interior looks original to us. Edges are clean, and the drums tune like a charm, easily taking both a high tuning and a more at home low tuning. Seams are in incredible shape on both drums. All hardware is original and clean, though there are signs of age such as a slight bit of bass drum claw pitting, and a little loss of luster. Wrap is even in hue and color, and is very vibrant. Hardware is completely original, and fully functional. The bass drum hoops show areas of minor wear from an attachment or pedal being used, but over all are in extraordinary shape. Drum heads are not original, and are Remo. This listing is for just the snare drum, and bass drum. As far as we can tell through the history and documentation of this kit, there were never additional toms and the outfit was sold as a two piece. This stunning WFL from 1937 is one of the first sets William F Ludwig would have made under the newly formed WFL drum company after selling the Ludwig name to GC Conn. The set consists of a 12x22 \"New Yorker\" sized bass drum, something that was not common to see in the day, and would later become popular as a component of the \"Ludwig New Yorker\" outfit released in the 50's to cater towards more compact outfits demanded by jobbing jazz drummers. The set also features a 8x12 tom and a 14x16 floor tom. Collectively, the sizes behave more of what you would expect from a 20\/12\/14 due to the shortened depths, taking high tunings and low tunings with ease. With that said, the drums are incredibly punchy when tuned low. The drum set would have originally had a second bass drum mounted cymbal arm, which is long gone likely due to the rather impractical place it was placed. The drums are so early in WFL production that they do not have any badges or even grommet holes for badges. Instead, there is a semi faded paper sticker on the 12\" tom, original and documented on many early WFL drums. The lugs are early \"Zephyr\" style lugs found on first generation WFL built pre-war and during early WWII before picking up wooden lugs, a common practice to adhere to war time metal rationing of the day. All the hardware appears original, with the exception of the batter floor tom hoop which is chrome and may be later WFL or of different origin. The floor tom would likely have been a cradle tom, with the WFL legs being added by a certified dealer, making them original in origin. It is possible that these are early iterations of the legs. The tom uses full length Zephyr lugs, as opposed to the small lugs that were often staggered on toms. This is also a five lug drum, giving it a unique Gretschy vibe. Both toms feature key holders with authentic WFL keys. The floor tom as fully functional mufflers, while the rest of the drums never had mufflers installed. This mid 60's Jazzette was painstakingly refinished in a shockingly accurate turquoise \u0026amp; gold duco that could easily be mistaken as the exact finish Ludwig had available in the 60's. Interiors have been painted white, using a near identical match to Ludwig's paint choice of the day. All original hardware, excellent edges, and a remarkable tuning range. Bass drum inlay is gold sparkle, to authentically replicate the 60's palette Ludwig offered. The bass ball bat mufflers that would have been installed on the toms are not present, however both Ludwig and Canopus make authentic reproductions that will fit. The bass drum would have originally had a mounted cymbal arm and bracket, the holes for which were plugged using another 60's Ludwig shell prior to painting. There are a few marks on the kit as this was done using authentic Duco paint, however this certainly gives the kit the \"original feel\" that was intended. Overall excellent condition, as this kit was cherished by the former owner. Maple\/Poplar clear interior shells with cohesive serial numbers. The wrap, inlays, and color are in incredible shape. All original and fully functional hardware is present on the kit. The one exception is the spring loaded push legs on the floor tom, which slide a little without some form of support. As a quick fix we wrapped a single band of gaffers tape around each leg, which works perfectly. Memory locks or pipe locks will take care of the problem as a long term solution. An unbelievably cool Slingerland Buddy Rich Outfit 80n Model complete with a chrome over brass snare drum, Tempo King bass drum pedal, Dynamo hi-hat stand, three no.66 cymbal stands, Rocket model snare stand, and set-o-matic tom holder. The set has been rewrapped, however the particular white marine chosen looks very convincing as a passible original. The wrap is taped rather than glued, and is tight with no lifting. Shells are in excellent condition, as is all of the set hardware. The 5x14 Chrome over Brass snare drum is original to the kit, and was likely opted for instead of the standard wood model featured in the catalog. The Snare drum is in very good shape with a fully working Zoomatic throw, and bright crisp sound. Cosmetically there are a few very minor dents and scratches to the drum, but nothing out of the ordinary or unsightly. All of the cymbal stands are in very good shape functionally, however one stand is missing a top set screw resulting in an inability to tilt, and is locked in place with a substitute. These drums sound absolutely massive with ample warmth and round low end both wide open and with a bit of muffling. The kind of drum set one thinks of when imagine band stages of the late 1940's to mid 1950's. This is a two owner kit, in near flawless condition, with intensely unique and fitting for the time mojo. The set consists of a factory 12x20 bass drum, two 8x12 toms on rail mounts, a 14x14 floor tom, and the coveted 4x14 downbeat snare. All drums except the second 8x12 tom are Transition Badge drums with clear interiors. According to the owner the kit was purchased as the 20\/12\/14\/14 configuration with a few unique custom requests - a 12x20 bass drum, a center mount for a small splash, a key holder installed on the 4x14 Downbeat snare, and two top tone controls for the 14\" tom for extra muffling. These were allegedly all done at the factory per his custom order. He would later order an additional 8x12 tom built out to be a right hand drum with another rail mount, which per his claim was done at Ludwig, making it a factory addition to the kit. By this time, Ludwig had just moved to white painted interiors and had already established the classic Keystone badge. The set had a WFL\/early Ludwig bass drum cymbal mount in the ride position per catalog prior to this which had to be removed to not obstruct the second tom, the holes were filled with the original mounting bolts. All non traditional specifications to this kit were done with beautiful precision, again hinting to the authenticity of these being factory specs. The drums all have original Ludwig heads and the snares have original wires. Both tacked resonant heads have minor edge splitting in areas, with the 13\" having one split that reaches further onto the head. Both tacked heads were painted with a white plastic like coating, possibly at the factory, and show ample chipping of this material. The bass drum is a single tension drum, using universal Walburg \u0026amp; Auge style claws and t-rods from the era. One center nodal lug and corresponding claw\/t-rod are missing, however the bass drum still keeps its tuning and feel well. The drum comes with an external muffler, a wood block and cowbell combination mount, an era accurate chrome cowbell, and a hoop mounted cymbal holder. The bass drum sports two hoop mounted legs. The set also includes a 40's hi-hat stand with low bell style cymbals. These brass cymbals have ample edge warping as typically seen. As such, the holes that were originally drilled for the Beavertail lugs were re-drilled at the factory, resulting in some hole widening and extra holes from re-drilling. The prior owner of this kit has taken mahogany lugs to fill these. The finish is a water dip lacquer, not an actual wood veneer. This was common on some drums of the era, with both Slingerland and Gretsch using water dip paints to create a remarkably real looking faux wood finish. Underneath this finish is white marine pearl. This kit was likely built from existing finished shells to fulfill and order, and since many of the drums of this era actually had their wraps built into the shell ply, Slingerland did not remove the white marine pearl prior to the water dip treatment. To add further unique ness, the snare drum uses a Jasper shell, who Slingerland was known to buy from at times. The snare is a three ply with reinforcement rings. All hardware is clean and fully functional. Floor tom feet have been replaced. It is possible this drum lost its original badge as the inside of the drum shows some wear and chipping around the grommet, likely done in an attempt to put a replacement badge on, however it is equally likely that this drum is original and just an early 80's drum. The 15\" tom has a stop sign badge that predates the rest of the drums by a few years, making it seem that this drum was an addition as well. These are the only two drums not drilled for internal mufflers, which suggest they are add ons. It is likely that the kit was ordered as a 24\", 12\", 13\", 14\", 16\" configuration with the other drums sourced later. Aside from some grommet wear, the drums are in great condition structurally and aesthetically. The 12\" and 13\" toms have been equipped with modern Gretsch GTS mounts, but mounts for the 10\", 14\", and 15\" are not present. The bass drum is complete with a hoop mounted Gretsch anchor, common for the era. No internal mufflers are present on the drums.
