Badges Drum Shop was founded by Charlie Andrews, a drummer and drum gear aficionado who wanted to honor the best brands and badges in the business while giving Cincinnati drummers a place to find and talk great gear with someone who understands them.

Andrews began drumming at age 10, progressing under music directors Matt Warner and Dan Grantham at Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy while training privately with drum teachers Dan Hessler, Todd Remmy, and Jeff Luft. While still in high school, Andrews gigged often and drummed for the student house band at the Blue Wisp Jazz Club. Andrews trained as a college student at Belmont University under the legendary drummer Zoro. While finishing his degree at Northern Kentucky University, Andrews continued private lessons with Scott Lang, Stan Ginn, and Mike Meloy and also interned at Pearl Drums in Nashville to experience the business side of the industry.

During all these years as an active musician, Andrews has meanwhile enjoyed learning the technical side of drum gear and the many brands and badges that contribute to the industry. A drum gear expert with a keen ear for the relationship between materials and sizes, Charlie enjoys helping other drummers find the right combination of drums, cymbals and accessories to achieve their best sound and maximize their joy of playing.

Andrews looks forward to serving drummers at Badges Drum Shop and points to three key areas that set Badges Drum Shop apart from drum departments at big music stores:

  • Badges Drum Shop is stocked with essentials plus unique options not available in big music stores. The shop also welcomes custom orders and has the expertise to help the buyer select and spec the product.
  • Andrews understands the needs of students and professionals and is familiar with equipment to achieve the best sound for every genre and situation.
  • Badges Drum Shop carefully selects the best quality offering at each price point and sells at the same minimum advertised price as big online retailers.

Andrews says everything about the shop was designed to delight drummers. Located in a cozy old building in downtown Mason, Badges Drum Shop will house a carefully-selected collection of kits, snares, cymbals, hardware, drumheads, and accessories unlike any in the area. Anchor drum and cymbal brands include Bosphorus, Canopus, Crescent, DW, Gretsch, Ludwig, Noble and Cooley, PDP, Paiste, Sabian, and Zildjian – plus the shop will offer a full selection of drum heads, sticks, and accessories from Aquarian, Big Fat Snare Drum, Evans, Low Boy, LP, Promark, Remo, Snareweight, Tackle Instrument Supply, Vater, Vic Firth and more. An online store will launch at badgesdrumshop.com when the retail store opens.

Badges Drum Shop will also offer lessons in the shop beginning January 2. Having benefitted greatly as student from the personal growth, friendships, and musical experiences that resulted from his training, Andrews believes it important to provide the community a learning environment.

“At Badges Drum Shop we believe drumming to be the heart and soul of music, a sacred tool for human expression and healing,” says Andrews. “This shop is therefore a project of passion and joy we hope you'll share with us. Whether you're looking for advice on the best gear for you, needing supplies for the gear you already have, or just want to talk drums and drummers and their music, we're here for you and hope you'll stop in.”
