New Collection of One-of-a-Kind Cymbal Craftsman Rides by Paul Francis

For all cymbal seekers who say, “I’ll know it when I hear it,” world-renowned cymbal maker Paul Francis stands out as one of the rare few who knows how to physically coax that sound out of a blank piece of bronze.

First famous for his decades at Zildjian, Paul has worked with decades of drumming greats to create many of the iconic modern cymbal sounds we admire. Now one of the co-founders of Royal Cymbals, he runs the high-end custom "Cymbal Craftsman" line, blending traditional techniques with modern innovation to create unique, handcrafted cymbals.

Trust is high for those putting their sonic dreams in Paul’s care, so for this collection of four cymbals, I asked him for four distinct pieces that would appeal to drummers looking for a special primary ride.

The result is indeed special:

22" Cymbal Craftsman Manta Ray Brilliant Ride - 2110g

“This is a small bell very thin ride that has a lot of give when played but has a fantastic stick definition.” - Paul Francis

22" Cymbal Craftsman High Bell Dry Ride - 2574g

“This is a blank that I custom ordered…to have that tall Hi Bell style cup in it. It is hand hammered and has a double scratch pass on bottom and top and the bell is left unlathed. Again great stick definition and is dry.” - Paul Francis

22" Cymbal Craftsman Overhammered Patina Ride - 2539g

“This is a very nice Cymbal Craftsman ride with a slightly higher curvature and has been over hammered with a new hammer head and anvil to give it more complexity and then the patina finish keeps everything in line.” - Paul Francis

22" Cymbal Craftsman Al Foster Style Ride - 3992g

“I made a few versions of Al's ride while I was at Zildjian and this one for [Badges Drum Shop] is based on the Z version and is a little heavier. The curvature mimics the Sound Creation of Al's and has a nice dark stick definition that will go for days.” - Paul Francis
